Model Licenses
This page explains what you're allowed to do with the 3D models you download from 3DP Ocean. There are two situations: models you generated, and models you downloaded from other creators.
1. Models you generated
When 3DP Ocean's AI pipeline produces a 3D model from your input image, the resulting GLB / STL / OBJ / etc. is licensed to you under the 3DP Ocean Creator License below. You also retain all rights you had in the original input image.
Same license, free or paid. Many AI 3D platforms downgrade free users to CC-BY-style attribution licenses or take ownership of free-tier outputs. We don't. Free users get the Creator License with the same rights as paid users, including commercial use without crediting 3DP Ocean.
1.1 The 3DP Ocean Creator License
You may:
- Print and use the model for personal projects, gifts, decorations, prototypes, and any non-commercial purpose.
- Use commercially: sell printed copies, use in client work, license to your customers, provided you have the rights to the input image (see Content Policy §4).
- Modify and remix: sculpt, retopologize, rig, texture, combine with other meshes.
- Share and publish the printed object, renders, or videos of the model.
- Publish to 3DP Ocean Community models as your own listing (free or paid).
You may not:
- Resell the raw mesh as-is on another model marketplace (Sketchfab, CGTrader, Cults3D, etc.) without significant modification. This protects 3DP Ocean's creator ecosystem from automated re-uploads.
- Use the model to train competing AI models.
- Use the model in ways that violate our Content Policy (CSAM, weapons designed to circumvent legal restrictions, etc.).
No attribution is required, but it's appreciated. Attribution is required if your input image was made by someone else under a license that requires it.
1.2 The AI systems behind your model
Your model is built by AI systems we license from our provider. We checked the licence terms so you do not have to: commercial use of what they produce is permitted, and no credit is required, not to the provider and not to us. That is what lets us grant you the Creator License above on the same terms whether you paid or not.
One limit nobody can remove, and it is worth understanding before you sell. No AI provider guarantees that AI-generated work can be copyrighted, and several countries have not settled the question. In practice: you are free to sell your model, but you may have less power to stop someone else selling something similar than you would with something you modelled by hand. Substantially sculpting, retopologising or re-texturing a model strengthens your position, because that part is your own work.
For the same reason, a model made from a similar photo by a different person can come out looking similar. Neither of you has done anything wrong, and neither of you owns the resemblance.
2. Community models you downloaded
Other creators publish their work under one of two listing types:
2.1 Free listings
Licensed under the 3DP Ocean Standard License. The same rights as the Creator License above, with one extra restriction:
- You may not resell the model as-is, including bundling it with other free models and selling the bundle.
- You may use it in commercial work where the model isn't the primary value being sold (a prop in a film, an accessory in a larger 3D scene, etc.).
2.2 Paid listings
Paid listings carry an Extended Commercial License by default. In addition to everything in the Standard License:
- You may use the model in commercial products where the model is a primary feature (collectible figurine, sold game asset, etc.).
- One purchase = one user. To use the same model across multiple end-users (e.g. distribute to your team) buy one license per seat or contact the creator for a team license.
Individual creators may attach additional listing-specific terms to a paid model, for example "not for use in NFTs" or "credit the creator when published commercially." Those are shown on the listing page above the download button. By downloading you agree to those terms in addition to this License.
2.3 The "incorporated product" rule
Following industry-standard marketplace practice (CGTrader, TurboSquid, etc.), the rights granted under section 2.1 and 2.2 are only for use of the model as part of an incorporated product: a printed object you sell, a render in a video, a character in a game, a frame in a film, a prop in an AR experience, and so on, meaning anything where the buyer of your end product can't trivially extract the raw 3D mesh.
You may not redistribute the raw mesh as-is (uploading the downloaded GLB / STL / OBJ to another 3D marketplace, sharing it on a Discord with "free download," or bundling it with other models for resale), even if you bought a paid Extended Commercial License. The license is for using the model, not for redistributing the file.
Significant modification (substantial sculpting, retopology, full re-texturing) lifts this restriction. "Significant" means a reasonable person comparing the original and the modified version would describe them as different works.
3. No-AI-training opt-out (creator-level)
Following the lead of marketplaces like CGTrader (which introduced a "Royalty-Free, No AI" license tier in 2024), we plan to surface a per-listing flag that lets creators mark their model as not available for AI training cooperation, a hard commitment that the file won't be passed to any third-party AI training pipeline, regardless of the broader platform-level stance. Until that flag ships in the creator dashboard, the platform-wide commitment in our Privacy Policy section 4.1 applies to everyone equally: we don't use any user's uploads or outputs for AI training.
4. Gold models
The Gold badge marks a small premium catalogue. Every Gold model is prepared and finished by hand before it goes up, which is what the higher download price pays for. Gold is never awarded to a listing for being popular, and putting a model in Community models never changes what it costs other people to download. Gold cannot be bought or requested.
Gold changes what a model costs to download. It does not change the licence you receive: a free Gold listing carries the Standard License, and a paid Gold listing carries the Extended Commercial License, on the terms set out above.
5. Termination
The license for a model attaches to the file you downloaded, not to your account. What ending a membership, running out of credits, or closing an account changes is set out below.
- Ending a membership changes nothing about models you have already downloaded. Your download history stays with your account, so taking another format or another size of a model you have already paid for remains free. What ends is the monthly allowance of new downloads.
- Running out of credits changes nothing about models you already hold. Credits pay for new work; they are not a condition of a license you have already been granted.
- Closing your account is different, and worth understanding before you do it. Deleting an account erases your stored files, your download history and any credits still on the account. Models you shared in Community models are not removed by closing your account — other people are using them under the licence you granted. If you need those taken down too, say so when you contact us and we will handle it with the account closure.
6. License disputes
If you believe a community listing infringes your rights, see the DMCA process in our Content Policy. If a buyer is misusing your model in violation of the listed license, contact us and we'll investigate.
7. Changes to these licenses
Any change to these licenses applies only to new downloads after the change takes effect. Models you've already downloaded keep the license that was in effect at the time of download.
